Web Terminology

Are you confused by web terminology? Here's a short list tto help you come to terms with some basics.

Web Strategy

Planning the what , why, who and basics of how you want your web site. This should link to business strategy! To have an effective site, you must know your target market, how you intend to reach them and how in particular web technologies will help you achieve that.

Web Requirements

This is a business oriented statement of what you want the site to achieve for you. It covers the major functions and processes. Good requirements increasingly delve into "customer touch points" where a customer service process may start, finsing its way into your CRM (for example Sugar CRM) or other systems. For more complex assignments, Steve will also engage in "ontology" (a hierarchical definition of your business termoinology and functions), information modelling (UML or ER) and business process modelling to ensure you get the result you are after.

Aim for nothing, hit nothing. Have a clear vision of a specific target, and you'll achieve it given focus and diligence!

Web Requirements
Barnes-Open offers a web requirements service, whereby we interview the stakeholders in your company, formulate a matrix of requirements, synergies, dependencies etc; and present recommendations back to the key contact in your organisation. The ability to do this well comes from years of activity in the area of business modelling and business analysis.

If you are not certain of your requirements, this type of engagement is well worth your while. The service is outcome based - i.e. we provide a report to you at the end, run through the recommendations in a workshop, and then help you plan your way forward.

Shopping Cart

"Shoping Cart" is fairly common language these days, and it's a very good paradigm given our frequent use of supermarkets. The shopping cart assembles the products you wish to purchase and helps you get to the checkout.

Steve uses VirtueMart as Barnes-Open's standard shopping cart. It is feature-rich, stable and well reputed. Significantly, it's been built especially for Joomla!, and at the time of writing, has the Editor's Pick on the Joomla! Extensions web site at Joomla.org .

Let's go to Wikipedia for more detail...

Barnes-Open Platform

The Barnes-Open Platform is a collection of technologies we have tried and proven for ourselves and our clients. In the content of public web sites, it is centred around the Joomla! Content Management System (CMS ).

Steve has implemented many Joomla! sites now, and knows what to do to set up Joomla! to make it perform for your organisation.

  • how to handle install and upgrades (perhaps two releases per year, including security enhancements)
  • which menu systems to use
  • how to set up the most effective and powerful editing environment
  • which components to use to extend your site's capability
  • which modules to use to add features or extend those components
  • the best plugins to enrich your content!

What is a CMS?
Content management solutions ("CMS") are software and database packages allow you’re your organization to create and update web site, Intranet and document content more easily.

Basically, a CMS puts the power to easily modify your web site without any special tools or knowledge right in your hands! That's why CMS is so important in todays business and social world.

A "Web Designer" or "Web Developer" gets your site up and running for you, with the right look and feel, menus and content storage areas, and you take it from there!

Yes, we do Flash!

We have had several enquiries of late if we do Adobe (Macromedia) Flash animations. We do!

178735_4354.jpg

Interestingly though, the web2 technologies are eating into the Flash territory, making it easier to access content and present it in a "flash" manner. What really counts here is what you are after as a client; if we can get the requirements and concept right, then we can find the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for you.

Flash Video
We also do Flash Video, which is the new progressive download video format from Macromedia that uses Sorenson Squeeze technology.

Colour Schemes

It's often a challenge for clients to envisage colours, and how they go together. It's like painting a house! That's why we prefer to work together on colour schemes to compliment and fulfil your strategy, match logo and effectively reach your target market(s).

One site I love is Color Lovers. If you are considering color scheme, go there and have a look!

Web Applications
Web applications are purely business applications that are available over the internet in a browser.

Business applications are migrating to the web for many reasons:
  • the web increases your reach to customers, partners and suppliers organisations are distributed across many locations, but need one system
  • staff are mobile, and the web provides for centrally available applications without multiple applications or copies of data
  • the technologies are more easily managed, and often cheaper in total,  than older PC technologies
Web applications include:

Why do the web?
Many businesses have invested in the web the past several years. Many have got a good return; many have thrown away lots of dollars into a hole that demands money each time they update, with little benefit.

So why do the web?

        and what about business strategy?
